Windows firewall

Q: I have had issues with the Windows Firewall blocking updates from AVG Anti-Virus 8. Windows XP updates now won’t download since I changed from the free version of Zone Alarm back to Windows’ own Firewall. What is the best free firewall with outbound traffic blocking and filtering that doesn’t require too much technical knowledge?

A: For the average user Windows Firewall does the job well enough (no, it does not block outbound traffic and it does not ask questions either). It has been interrupted with the use of Zone Alarm and you may need to remove or alter some entries in it. There is help on this: www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/security/winfirewall.mspx. However, I recommend you upgrade your free AVG 8 to the company’s paid Internet Security Suite which has an excellent firewall.
