Kevin Rudd’s family history

Judy Rudd, an amateur genealogy researcher in southern Queensland, was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s great-great uncle, Remus Rudd, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Melbourne in 1889.

Both Judy and Kevin Rudd share this common ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows at the Melbourne Gaol. On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription:

‘Remus Rudd horse thief, sent to Melbourne Gaol in 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Melbourne-Geelong train six times. Caught by Victoria Police Force, convicted and hanged in 1889.’

So Judy recently e-mailed Prime Minister Rudd for information about their great-great uncle, Remus Rudd.

Believe it or not, Kevin Rudd’s staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

“Remus Rudd was famous in Victoria during the mid to late 1800s . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Melbourne-Geelong Railroad.

Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad.

In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the Victoria Police Force.

In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honour when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.”

Now, how’s that for Government political spin?

Spin or someone getting their leg pulled. This was obviously sent as a joke.

  2. John says:

I wrote it up because it’s clever, but it seems too made up to be authentic.

  3. Joe says:

It is a good joke on political spin but it is not true.

  4. John says:

Whether it is or it isn’t, it makes a good yarn.

  5. Patricia says:

It is true if you do your research

  6. John says:

    Thanks Patricia, no worries.

Would love to prove its authentic for the sceptics I know..
They need to find out what this guy is really capable of before it is too late for this country.
    Any ideas please
    true or fabricated..

  8. John says:

You’ve read the comments, Dawn, so you know as much as I do.

Google - Congressman Harry Reid. It’s an urban myth.

It’s a wonder KR has turned out such a nice fellow then :)

  15. As a 3rd Cousin to Kein Rudd “Assinated PM” with a knife in the back. This story may make a good joke it certainly is not true..Buy ‘Mary Wade’ to us. It has all the ‘Rudd’ ancestry in it except for Kevins Family…His Mother & Father are there but not their children ‘Malcolm, greg,Loree, & Kevin’ his father was my 1st cousing as His grandparents were married to brothe & sister (my Mother & Father). He did a good job & kept us out of a recession but perhaps He did not listen to His Cabinet the last couple of months & made too many decisions with the ‘BIG FOUR’ No 1 being Julia Gilliard ‘The Titanium Lady’ but then a Lady would not have done what she did………I’d like to see her play full forward for the ‘bulldogs AFL.

  16. John says:

Thanks for your input, Marjorie. Will we ever know the truth behind these leadership spills? Ms Gillard maintains she was faithful to her leader right up to the day. But the big question is, can she play football at all? :)

This story would appear to be defamitory. The man shown being hung is an American bandit named Black Jack Ketchum and he was hung on 20 April 1901.

  18. paul cielo says:

Its all a load of rubbish. Firstly, horse thiefs were not hanged in Australia. Secondly, the picture of the hanging cannot be in Melbourne jail as stated. Their gallows are within the buildings. Thirdly, the picture associated with this storey is of Black Jack Ketchums hanging in New Mexico in 1901.

Are you people relatives of Rudd? Complain to the source of the story above.
